Astroblepus sp. — Andean climbing catfish

Astroblepus

Astroblepidae · Andean climbing catfishes

This project aims to document as many different varieties and species of the unique catfish genus Astroblepus as possible — the only genus in the family Astroblepidae, and one of the most specialised freshwater fishes in the world.

Found exclusively in fast-flowing Andean streams between 500 and 3,500 m above sea level, Astroblepus species are masters of torrential current, capable of climbing near-vertical rock faces using their modified sucker mouths. New individuals are added continuously to the overview and distribution map.
